DO you give Vince Hall a realistic shot at making the team this year, or is he camp fodder? Jim Thomas: There are two, possibly three spots open at linebacker this summer. So Hall would have to flash, and possibly beat out one of the three (McGarigle, Vobora, or Chamberlain.)
leanlikeacholo: Have you heard anything about switching Chris Chamberlain to SS? Jim Thomas: That was speculated in some of the draft publications, and I think Chamberlain did some work at safety either at his pro day or the combine. But the Rams see him strictly as a weakside LB and special teamer.
Chavous is listed as 6-1 208. Bartell is listed at 6-1 205. Basically identical except that Bartell is way faster, can cover a lot better, and did not miss anywhere near the number of tackles Chavous missed. Yet, Bartell is somehow deemed too undersized for the position. Huh?
Bartell performed VERY well in the games where he was in a hybrid SS-OLB spot, defending both the run and the pass. Haslett praised him for his performances. So why don't the Rams just make the transition now, not at mid-season when they have already lost games because a certain someone is way past his prime?
Your thoughts? Jim Thomas: Bartell did get a lot of work at safety during minicamp, but I think that was due to the fact that Todd Johnson missed the first two days because he had a charity committment. I'm not sure about Bartell playing "VERY WELL" last season at the hyrid spot. And besides, Bartell's preference is playing corner.
El Centro Ram Fan: Hi Jim, Thanks for taking the time for these chats. It helps us die-hards get through the off-season. I have a couple comments and a question. First, while I have kind of been on the fence in the should-Linehan-go-or-stay debate, I'm glad he got another season. I'm still not completely sold on him but I think last year's debacle was a result of poor drafting by the organisation and a absolutely ridiculous amount of injuries (after yet another Ram went down last year, my brother said "what's next, a swarm of locusts?"). I also hope the Rams become a stable franchise like the Steelers, consistently good and not a lot of turnover at the head coaching position. Second, if Chip Rosenbloom is still taking suggestions for throw-back ideas, I say they use the blue and white uniforms of the 60's. I always use those when playing madden. My question is regarding the linebacker corps. It seems awful thin. Do you see any attempt at addressing this situation before the season or are the Rams pretty much content to go with what they have with the additions in the draft? Jim Thomas: If nothing else, I think Linehan deserved another chance because of the injuries. John Shaw said as much. We'll see what happens this year. I know you don't want to hear this because the NFL is a bottom line business. But Linehan is a good man; let's see if he's a good coach. Send me an e-mail on the throwbacks, and I'll forward it chip. I've gotten a couple of replies from him _ he apparently is reading them all. Wondering about the LBs, too. I think the Rams are looking long and hard at the youngsters, letting them get all the reps they can at minicamp and the OTAs. If they don't like what they see, I'm sure they'll look around. But I think there's an overall committment _ not just at LB _ for seeing what some of these young guys have got.
Good to hear the Cougars are doing well. If you had to choose an undersized baseball player to lead one of your teams, which one would it be? Jim Thomas: Jamesell Kee, who has played for Fontbonne U. a year or two ago, is fast, competitive, and can play infield or outfield. He's an up-and-coming legion coach, and is about to get his degree. Not bad for someone deemed not good enough to make his varsity squad in high school.
gp: Other than being a regular participant at the off season worksouts, how is Wroten doing? Do you think his apparent change will turn into positive results on the field? Jim Thomas: I'm maintaining a high degree of skepticism on this one. Apparently, he was told to stay in St. Louis (and stay away from his pals in Louisiana) or else he might get cut. He looks the part. Now, he's got to play it.
ztraM ekiM: How long will Scott Linehan be allowed to keep his job if the team starts out poorly? Will he be given the whole season, even if the team starts out 0-8 again? He seems to be getting a lot more leniency than Martz got. Jim Thomas: I seriously doubt Shaw will make a change in the middle of a season.
This not a RAM's question, though I would be interested in your thoughts on the likelihood that Chase Daneils will be drafted in 2009 ? Jim Thomas: I think Chase gets drafted, but his lack of height will push him down in the draft.
sean: i was thinking about it, and i realized something a little scary. our core is aging...guys like holt, pace, little, and even bulger, are getting older. yet the team has some young guys that may be able to take thier place-a new core if you will...will those young guys ever be able to be a pace/little/holt? i guess my question is which young players can be our future-our probowlers Jim Thomas: Well, I hope you're right. Let's see what happens with Carriker and Hill this year. Barron, too. Can the new WRs (Avery and Burton) step in immediately? Will Long be a better version of Wistrom (and Wistrom was very good for about five years here)? Will new o-linemen (Greco and Schuening) be future starters? One of the reasons the Rams are in this mess is they haven't replaced some of the departing Rams such as Fletcher, Fred Miller/Ryan Tucker, Pickett, etc.
sean: during 99 and 01, did the rams have any vocal leaders, a ray lewis type of ra ra guy? do we have enough of the types of leaders a team needs to be confident/cocky again? Jim Thomas: On defense alone, London Fletcher was about as vocal as it gets in '99 and '01. I'm not sure if they have many of those guys now.
Larry F.: Keep hearing the pat couple weeks that the decision to head to Wisconsin for training camp is a basically done deal to be announced any day and no announcement comes-anything up with the delay? Jim Thomas: To my knowledge, there have been some issues over how much Concordia wants to charge to host the Rams; and there are still some issues over charter flights _ both getting the team to Wisconsin and back, as well as flying down to Tennessee for the joint practices. The charters for an entire camp roster, plus coaches, trainers, etc., are very expensive. I'm told in the range of $300,000 to $400,000.
jeff h: How did little look at camp. is his toe healed and is his speed back.until the rams get someone nasty at linebacker/safety can they have a above average defense? and last how do you see the offensive line who playing and where. thanks for the time. Jim Thomas: Little looked pretty good. He was held out of team drills. But was moving very well, and in talking with him, he seems very optimistic that he will return to form in '08. Sure, it would be nice to have more of a beast at safety or linebacker. But if Little is back to form and Chris Long has an immediate impact, that will make the entire defense better. On the o-line, it looks like LT Pace, LG Bell, C Romberg, RG Incognito, RT Barron. Setterstrom had some problems with his exchanges at center during the minicamp. It looks like Goldberg will be strictly a tackle. If something happens to Pace, Barron shifts to LT and Goldberg goes to RT.
Graham from England: Hi Again Jim from the mother country
What are you hearing about Steven Jackson and any new contract. This guy is a proven commodity in the NFL but has also had his share of injuries. Is there a feeling that the Rams want to see how this season starts before committing a stash of cash to one player Jim Thomas: It may not happen before the start of training camp, or even the start of the regular season, but the Rams seem determined to have Jackson under long-term contract no later than the end of 2008. They continue to have talks with Jackson's agent. But I don't think the Rams are waiting to see how the season starts before committing to Jackson.
TROY OF MARYLAND: Hey Jim I forgot one other thing do the team ever talk about or notice how the national media talks down on them (I know we stunk last year)but wow. Jim Thomas: Many of the players aren't that different from fans. They watch a lot of Sportscenter and NFL Network. And they read the Internet. So I'm sure they're aware of some of the national media comments.
bfulton: How much of the play book can rookies take with them before they graduate and sign their contract? Given that this is a relatively new system for the team, how much of the play book can veterans take with them when they leave the Rams' facilities? Jim Thomas: Don't know about the rookies, but I saw Looker leaving with a huge playbook Sunday. It apparently was the playbook for the 14 practices during the OTA period.
In your opinion, what, if anything, positive or negative, is the biggest difference between the 2007 Rams team at the conclusion of their first full mini-camp and this year's squad? Jim Thomas: Positive, there seemed to be a lot of energy on the practice field. A very good tempo, both during drills and even going from drill to drill. Marc Bulger seems commmitted more than ever to being a team leader. Chris Long will help the defense. (More than Dorsey? Don't know.) New offenses coaches, particularly Saunders and RB coach Valero are much more vocal than their predecessors.
Gabriel 2 Snow: I saw that Yvenson Bernard failed a physical, is he out of the picture? Also, should Caleb get cut in Detroit, can we send a zillion e-mails or something to get him a tryout with the Rams? Jim Thomas: Yeah, once you fail your physical, you're done with that team. On Campbell, I don't know if the e-mails will work. For example, some of the local media were lobbying the front office and coaching staff to sign Mizzou S Pig Brown, and that didn't work.
Gabriel 2 Snow: Hi Jim, welcome back to the "trenches". Three issues if you will. 1. I assume you have spoken with your son, how big a deal was the Caleb Campbell pick, together with the free agents signed?(I believe their punter was signed, & at least one other)Can you tell me where to watch for Army players in NFL camps? 2. The Rams first 8 games are brutal, but if they somehow claw out a 3-5 mark at that juncture, it could get interesting. Is it just too much to hope for? 3. There are a lot of positive signs in Ram land. Unfortunately, most of us felt exactly the same way 365 days ago. From your prospective, what are the most poitive indicators as we move toward camp, & are the hints we've been getting that this team may actually be gelling in a very positive way overstated? It sounds wonderful, but it couldn't be any earlier. Thanks Jim, Go Army! Jim Thomas: 1.) It was a big deal. The punter Owen Tolson (who was invited to the Combine), signed as an undrafted fa with the New York Giants, I believe. Also, an Army FB Joe Viti (sp?) signed with someone as an undrafted FA.
2.) I think 3-5 would be almost an optimum record at the break.
3.) I think the coaching staff, particularly on offense, will be much better than a year ago. I'm not sure if the personnel is dramatically better over last year.
As Ram charter PSL season ticket holder living in Wisconsin , I am anxiously awaiting to see if the Rams will hold training camp at Concordia University in Mequon, Wi. I am within one hour drive time. Please update on the latest you are hearing regarding finalizing summer camp at that location . Thank you Ramfandan Jim Thomas: Get the car gassed up. The Rams are coming to Concordia this summer. There has been no official announcments, but we are reporting today on stltoday.com that the team has decided to come to Concordia.
I'm sure you're gonna get TONS of questions about this but just in case...how did Avery and Burton look in camp? Did any particular receiver (not just Avery or Burton)drop an excess amount of balls?
It seems obvious that Looker will have no place on this team with Caldwell, Avery, and Burton as newcomers and I have no problem with this since the only reason he was here was for Wilkins, do you see him being released maybe before training camp or is competition that tight in WR?
Oh and with the whole Long rushing past Barron event...was Barron not paying attention at the time or did the kid honestly get beat? I'm just ready to see Long vs. Pace to see how that'll fair. Jim Thomas: Again--I don't have a hard and fast opinion on either, although they both looked fast and quick. And to be honest, it's hard to see a whole lot when they're indoors _ which they were on Friday and Sunday. With 85 bodies on an 80-yard field, we're usually screened off by watching players during "team" drills. Indoors, we're looking at the action from what amounts to an end zone view. Outdoors, we're basically on the 50-yard line. Looker caught a lot of passes during the minicamp, and looked good. He was getting more work than normal, I would suspect, because Torry Holt did very little "team" work. While, I agree that Looker could be the odd man out, he's also a very hard worker and one of Linehan's favorites.
WIU Supporter: Jim, What's the deal with the Rams holding out on making a training camp announcement? Used to love to go to Macomb for the "access" fans had to players. Do you think Macomb has any shot at this point, or will Linny and his FOSLs get their wish to head further north to Wisconsin? Wasn't really fair that Asst. Coach Horton (an ex-Wisconsin staffer)did the site visits. It stinks for the economic development people in either location to have to wait on management's hem-hawing around. They need to plan special "fan-friendly" events and attractions around Training Camp. Gut feeling---where are they going and when will an announcement be made? Jim Thomas: We are reporting, on Stltoday.com, that the Rams have decided to train at Concordia Wisconsin.
clark bloom: Do you think the Rams will benefit this year from having the second worst record and therefore have the second right of refusal (after Miami) of any players that are cut when rosters from other teams are being trimmed? I still believe that the Rams are woefully thin at the third-down back and defensive end positions. In fact, I was hoping that the Rams might take a look at running back William Greene, formerly of the Browns. Also, do you think the Rosenblooms may make a fresh start at the top with new senior management when Shaw retires in the near future? As steady and professional as Shaw, and Zygmunt, presents themselves, there is a long track record of mediocrity under their leadership. What have you heard? Jim Thomas: Well, it's one small benefit of being lousy. But usually, other team's rejects usually don't become other teams' treasures. I think Shaw will stick around as long as necessary to help Rosenbloom get his feet under him as owner. Rosenbloom thinks very highly of Shaw, and as long as Shaw wants to be around _ in whatever capacity _ Rosenbloom will have a place for him. They are not just business associates _ they are long-term friends. To a lesser extent, I think the same holds true for Zygmunt.
Eric: Hey Jim, hows it going. I'm just another Ram's fan still devoted to my team here in Los angeles. Just wondering what are the chances Burton could jump Bennett as the #2 receiver? Any word if the Rams will pick up any veteran free agents, such as; Mike Doss, Michael Pittman, or maybe Jeremy Newberry, who look to fit in more than others? Thanks for answering buddy. Jim Thomas: First things first. Burton needs to make the roster. I think he's a long way off from challenging Bennett. But a couple of years down the road, who knows? Haven't heard any scuttlebutt about any possible veteran additions.
Aron: How did the two 7th round LB do at Minicamp Jim Thomas: They didn't really stand out to me one way or another, although I have to say I didn't watch them a whole lot. They both seemed like they moved pretty well.
Tom Liberto: Do you think that Adam Carriker will be given a chance at playing defensive end like he did in college? It makes more sense to me to let him play his natural position like he did in college rather than defensive tackle as he did last year. After all, that's what he is used to doing. Why didn't they do that in the first place? I am excited about Chris Long comming to the Rams also. We should have a much improved pass rush this year. As a long time Rams fan, I would love to see another fearsome foursome. It's really been a long, long time since we had anything like that. I followed the Rams draft, and I can't see any reason why we shouldn't have a much better year than last, that is, except for injuries. On the other hand, you just never know. I've been a fan since the days of Roman Gabriel, Jack Snow, and the fearsome foursome with Decon Jones and Merlin Olsen. That will never change no matter where the Rams play. However, I must admit that I miss them being here in Los Angeles and Anaheim. Sincerely, Tom Liberto Jim Thomas: Tom--Carriker played about one-third of the time at RE over the last five, six games of the 2007 season because of the injury to DE James Hall and Leonard Little's surgery. But he's not what you would call a natural pass rusher, and the Rams see his future as an interior player. I do think the d-line will be better next year, especially if Little returns to form and Hall stays healthy. But I'll go on record right now about Chris Long: Be patient. At RE, he will be facing a lot of great pass-blockers at Left Tackle. As good as he was in college, he has a lot to learn on the NFL level, particularly in this defense. I'm not expecting miracles right off the bat.
Chip: Does Clifton Ryan either start or play his way into the starting lineup this year? He sure flashed some skills at times last year, with AC and Long, that's a nice young lineup.
Is Greco a long term (right) tackle or is he playing out of position because we have so little depth at that spot?
Thanks, Chip Jim Thomas: Eventually, Ryan may work his way into the starting lineup. But for now, I still think the starters are Glover and Carriker.
I think Greco could be a long-term RT. But the Rams seem to think his future might be at RG. At the minicamp, he was strictly a backup RT working with the second unit behind Goldberg. (Barron was strictly at left tackle at minicamp because Pace and his torn labrum weren't ready to take part in "team" drills.)
Rampage88: Hey Jim! When is Torry Holt going to get over the fact that we let Bruce go? I can see why some fans are upset, but he is getting a pay check. If Bruce really wanted to be a Ram he would have taken a pay cut. It appears Torry doesn't have faith in Linehan, but if my memory serves me correctly it was Torry Holt who fumbled the ball in our home game last year versus the 49ers which lead to us losing. Linehan also brought in Saunders to try to heal the relationship with Torry. Do you see him turning into a distraction?
P.S. Any plans by the Rams to bring in another veteran OT to back up? I think last time you mentioned Fred Miller? Jim Thomas: Bruce took a pay cut during his previous negotiation, following the 2005 season. And he offered to take a $1 million pay cut this time around. Not $10,000. Not $100,000. But $1 million. I don't think this Holt situation will be a distraction. But we'll see.
Haven't heard anything about the Rams seriously looking for veteran backup help at tackle. As of now, Adam Goldberg has a new lease on life at tackle, under his former o-line coach with the Minnestoa Vikings, Steve Loney.
redbird ridiculous: I've heard that the rumors about the Patriots taping the Rams walk-through before SB XXXVI have been around for a while. Has this been reported before February of this year, and, if so, why are these rumors only recently being reported and/or investigated? Thanks. Jim Thomas: It was first reported on prior to this past season's Super Bowl. Why it took that long to surface, I'm not sure. But I'm sure the allegations last September about the Patriots illegally taping the Jets' defensive signals stirred this up.
CPL Thomas: Hey coach I think I figured this damn thing out. I wanted to ask how the cougars are doing. Thanks. Jim Thomas: Is this Cadet 3rd Class Thomas, aka Corporal Thomas, of the United States Military Academy, West Point?
If so, your old Cougars team is unbeaten, 11-0, in the spring high school league at Affton Athletic Association. We've clinched the division title and begin the playoffs next Monday. It's a far cry from when you played there, son. Those Ballwin teams were tough, weren't they?
Do you still have your Isaac Bruce jersey? Shouldn't you be in class? And when do finals start? Next week? Go ARMY!!!
Russ in Phoenix: Hey Jim! Thanks for taking my question. I always viewed Isaac Bruce as the Spiritual leader of the Rams due to his strong personal relationship with God. Who would succeed Isaac as the Spiritual leader? Is former DT Ray Agnew still with the team as team pastor? Thanks again! Jim Thomas: Ray Agnew is still around. And during the season, there has always been regular Bible studies with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Walt Enoch and Ricky Horton, the former Cards baseball pitcher.) But I'd be hard-pressed to name one or two current players that might be considered spiritual leaders.
Buzz: Jim, Most of the draft experts panned the selection of WR Donnie Avery by the Rams in the second round. They cite his hands and route running concerns. Pro Football Weekly has written that both Avery and Keenan Burton have trouble catching the ball. Did you see enough of them in Minicamp to form an opinion? What are the coaches saying? Can these guys catch the ball consistently or not? Those two receivers will make or break the 08 draft. Thanks. Jim Thomas: I didn't really see enough of Avery and Burton to form an opinion. I'll have a better idea a couple of weeks into camp. What the "experts" may not have known is that Avery had a hand injury (I think it was a thumb problem) that made it more difficult for him to catch the football. I'm not ready to say these guys have hands like Torry Holt, but they did catch a ton of footballs in college _ so they must have some ability in that area.
Cali Rams Fan: I want to start by saying that I am officially heartbroken. First Isaac, now, if reports are true, Torry could be shipping out based on his dis-interest to re-sign with the Rams. I wish we could keep him here to retire a Ram. Ideally, I feel loyalty to players who have contributed as much as Isaac and Torry have, not only shows class, but also shows genuine appreciation. In the long run, I would think that more players would be willing to come play for an organization that shows they appreciate the blood shed, broken bones, sweat and tears a player sacrifices throughout an entire career. But this is ultimately a business, so if it has to be, then so be it. What do you think some trade options could look like for us before Holt becomes a free agent and we are left with nothing in return? Jim Thomas: Given their current uncertainties at the WR position, I think the last thing the Rams would want to do is trade Holt. Even with his knee issues, Holt was still a solid No. 1 WR last season. He will be an 11-year vet and 34 years old when his current contract expires. He might just retire at that time, particularly if brother Terrence no longer is with the Panthers.
Chris: Jim, I read a story recently out of Denver that suggested the Rams are one of the few organizations in the NFL that does not pay bonuses to undrafted free agents. Can you tell us if this is indeed the club's policy and what their logic is with this? At least on the surface, it seems the team would lose out on some decent players who might otherwise be willing to come to camp with St. Louis. Jim Thomas: I don't know what the league-wide policy is. With some of the undrafted free agents in the past, I have noticed that the Rams do give them a small amount of bonus money. ($10,000, $15,000, etc.). I guess, it could cost them some rookie free agents.
Ken, Lake Tahoe, CA: Hey Jim, good to have you back. I've been a big fan of T. Holt since he was drafted, but I'm not sure I like this new outlook of his. He's been in this league long enough to know the NFL is a business. I can understand his disappointment in losing a good friend to the enemy (49ers), but as I see it, he needs to stop whining and start concentrating on taking over the role Isaac left behind. Does he want to embrace that role and/or is he capable of being the leader that #80 was on the field and in the locker room? Any other thoughts regarding his new-found attitude? The new kids need him. His current moping can only hurt the cause, not help it... Jim Thomas: I think Torry will get over it. And he isn't moping on the football field. He was helping the youngsters during minicamp. But you can't blame him for being shocked by Bruce's departure. If it can happen to Isaac, it can happen to anyone, and that's a hard reality for Holt and other veterans on the team.
Lawarence Marmie: Will all the focus of the offseason being on whether or not Scotty Linehan would be back- is Jim Haslett also under the microscope this season? His defense has shown very little progess in his tenture (finishing in the bottom third of the league both years) and he seemed incapable of making adjustments at the half in almost every game this past season- including the Atlanta game where their 3rd string QB came in and ripped us apart- almost blowing a huge lead. They seem to be a defense without an indentity- are we agressive and go after the opponent or do we rush three and set everyone else back in a soft zone? The "Blitzburg" days seem to be a distant memory as he seems to mostly favor a "Rope-a-dope" defense now days. Jim Thomas: I agree that the overall results of the Rams defense have been disappointing under Haslett, but I did think they were better overall _ particularly against the run _ until the final few games of the '08 season, when it looked like the front seven got worn down. Although everyone thinks of the offense, especially the offensive line, when talking about the injuries last season. But the defense had its share as well, with starters Tye Hill, Leonard Little and Pisa Tinoisamoa ending up on IR. The team's best corner, Fakhir Brown missed 4 games due to suspension; ditto for backup DT Claude Wroten. DE James Hall spent most of the second half of the season hobbling on a bad high ankle sprain. SS Corey Chavous missed time with a torn chest muscle. Haslett showed a lot of innovation after Little went down, using a lot of three-man fronts in passing situations and using Witherspoon as an edge rusher with very good success. Three years in a row now, the Rams have expended their first-round draft pick on defense. We'll see if that investment pans out this season.
Ken Jacque: Jim- I'm a long time Rams fan from MA. I'm happy with the moves we have made this offseason. Long was the right pick in the first round. >From what you have seen from mini-camp will Avery (WR)add quality to the slot position. (did he look like he was mentally getting it and playing fast) I believe the TE position will also be a big factor this year. Did that position look any different scheme wise this weekend. -Ken Jim Thomas: It's tough to make hard-and-fast judgements on just one minicamp. Avery looked fast. Caught the ball OK. Didn't really get much work, I thought, during team (or 11-on-11) periods on Saturday and Sunday. I'm sure his head is spinning. The playbook is a lot thicker under offensive coordinator Al Saunders, and in college _ believe it or not _ Avery didn't even have a playbook at Houston. So the learning curve will be steep.
2.) Early impressions on the TE position. It looks like Saunders will use the TE more in the passing game. McMichael was thrown the ball a lot over the weekend, perhaps has much as anyone on the field. Klopfenstein also got a fair amount of action. (And a lot of these _ for both players _ were deeper routes over the middle.) It looks like McMichael will be the every-down TE; Klopfenstein will be the "move" guy (in motion, shifting, occassionally in the backfield); and newcomer Anthony Becht will do the heavy lifting as the blocking specialist.
First Commandment: Re "Big Game's" desire to join his brother after his contract expires. Dear Mr. Holt. Go where your heart tells you to go, especially if it isn't here. When the spirit is weak, it's over. When it's over in your mind, you shouldn't blame anyone else for the team not winning. It's nice of you to stay for remainder of your contract but If you don't want to do what you are paid to do, viz., your best, then leave. It would be nice to have a team that could make up for last year in 2008 and 2009. Hope you attitude changes. You should be working out with your teammates. We need an "Every Game" type of player more than a "Big Game" guy. Good health and a future "bon voyage", if that's what you want. Jim Thomas: Your points are all well taken. But Holt has done nothing but give his all to the organization, even when he was hurt.
Stan: Jim, I haven't heard anything about how the contracts are going for any of our draft picks. What's the status on them? Thanks for the time. Stan Jim Thomas: Very early for any action on draft picks. Usually, nothing starts percolating on that until June. Some earlier reports (on radio, I think) that the Rams were close on Chris Long were w-a-y off base.
bjsgolf: Jim, Peter King wrote a few weeks ago that Alex Barron "does not like football" and "is a below average tackle." After the draft, Scott Linehan said that "John Greco will immediately start learning to play right tackle." I am not saying that anyone should start preparting a bust for Alex Barron in the Hall of Fame, but I don't think he is horrible. I remember John St Clair, Grant Williams, Kyle Turley, Blaine Saipaia, etc, etc. Jim Thomas: Agreed _ he's much better than horrible. But as I mentioned earlier, the tease with Barron is that he could be so much better.
Thanks for this continued opportunity for the Fans to talk to a reporter with your inside understanding of the Rams. Priceless!
A couple of questions about the draft:
1. The Rams seemed to be interested in Felix Jones and Chris Johnson. Are they in need of a second string running back now or are they hedging their bets because Jackson is in his last year. Are they unhappy with Leonard and Pittman?
2. Wide receiver was regarded as a big need entering the draft and it was no surprise that the Rams used two picks on the position. Avery seems to be the most controversial of all the picks because he was the first WR taken and everybody seemed to have a better idea. If Avery had not been available, which receiver might they have chosen? Or would they have just picked another position? Jim Thomas: 1.) I think Linehan was intrigued by the idea of adding a speed option in the backfield as a change-of-pace to Steven Jackson. That's why Felix Jones and Chris Johnson were interesting possibilities. As I may have mentioned during the post-draft chat, someone at Rams Park indicated fairly strongly to me that the team would have strongly considered taking Felix Jones if he was there at No. 33. Neither Pittman nor Leonard have the kind of speed that Jones (or Johnson for that matter) would've brought to the table.
2.) I don't know who the Rams' second choice would've been. The Rams did like DeSean Jackson but because of his lack of size, he would've been limited to a slot receiver/return role. I was told the only way the Rams would've considered taking him in the second round is if a trade (quite possibly involving the first-round pick) would've produced an extra second-round pick.
LaRamBob: Jim, What's the deal with the Rams third QB spot? Seems to me they'd want to have a young guy to groom. Bulger has been beaten up and Green could be a hit or two away from retirement. Are the Rams hoping to grab someone else's reject? Heard any rumors or are there any guys you'd like at #3? Jim Thomas: I was mildly surprised that they didn't come out of the draft with a No. 3 QB. Even if they thought Brock Berlin was the answer at No. 3 (which I don't think is the case) they still need another arm just to get them through camp. I'm sure the Rams are keeping an eye on the Tampa Bay situation where there are currently 6 QBs on the roster.
I'm just wondering why did Chris Long choose No. 72 over 98 as first expected? Does that have anything to do with Glenn Dorsey's number and Rams not selecting him with 2 overall pick?
Thanks from Rams fans in Serbia! Jim Thomas: You know, I never asked Chris why No. 72. I don't think it has anything to do with Dorsey. Long did joke that it's also the number of Giants DE Osi Umenyiora (sp?) and that maye it will make him faster!
bfulton: As I remember, the classic Tampa Bay Cover 2 Defense used their CBs in a zone. Everything I understand about the Rams' version of the Cover 2 is that the CBs are used man-to-man. Why do the Rams do it differently? Jim Thomas: Although basically a man-to-man defense, the Rams use multiple coverages. The specific coverage type you might be referring to is generically known as 2-man. The safeties play in the deep zone, like the traditional cover 2, and the corners play man to man. I think it's just a preference by Haslett who generally likes his corner to play a more aggressive style of coverage.
dominic: Hey Jim: Are you satisfied with Alex Barron as a starting tackle or does he scare you as a player? And do you forsee them signing any other street free agents besides maybe Michael Pittman and a quarterback? Hope you continue these chats up to your vacation. Jim Thomas: I think Alex Barron is a B- player. The Rams could do a lot worse. But the problem is, and the frustration with coaches, is that Barron could be so much better. Does he care enough about the game? Does he really want to do what it takes to be the best at his profession?
As for further moves, I'm sure the Rams will continue to look around. Fullback perhaps? We'll see.
Once again thanks for the forum. Do you really think that Scott Linehan has the qualities to be a Head Coach? Linehan struggles with his communication skills, however, is it true he was a Communications Major at Idaho? Also he has a milquetoast personality, can he motivate? What did John Shaw & Jay Zygmunt see or hear in this man? Yes he is affable, but he lulls everyone to sleep. Jim Thomas: I think your questions about Linehan's leadership abilities are dead-on. Can he lead? Can he gain or re-gain the respect of some veterans. Can he get the team through tough times better than he did a year ago, thus preventing two_ or three-game losing streaks from becoming eight-game skids? Linehan seems to project and prevent himself much better in smaller settings, and that probably was how he sold himself to Zygmunt and Shaw. We'll see what happens. I'm as curious as the next guy as to how this plays out in '08.
